A hoist is a device that is used for lifting or lowering a load by means of a drum or lift -wheel around which rope or chain wraps. It may be manually operated, electrically or pneumatically driven and may use chain, fiber or wire rope as its lifting medium.

COMMON TYPES OF HOISTS ARE:

  • Gantry Crane: A Gantry crane is similar to an overhead crane except that the bridge for carrrying trolley or trolleys is rigidly supported on two or more legs running on fixed rails or other runway.

    Monorail Crane:
This is an overhead track upon which carriers travel , used to transport loads. In monorail crane, a beam (with a gripping mechanism) suspended from a gantry crane or a traveling hoist moves vertically in a gate groove for lifting or lowering a gate or a stop-log.

  • Rope Drum Hoist: Rope drum hoist generally consists of a wired rope and pulley. These hoist own the capability to carry bulky objects weighing several tons. Hoist frame, drive unit, gear traing with wire rope drum, wire ropes, equalizer plantes and couplings are few important parts of rope drum hoist.

    Hydraulic Hoist:
Hydraulic Hoist of higher capaciteies are economical and operationally better suited. These are also termed as best where the space may be a problem. Hydraulic hoist is perferred where the speed of operation is critical. Since the parts of this system are self-lubricated and totally enclosed these hoists require minimum maintenance.

  • Screw Hoist: Screw Hoist are generally of two type i.e. non raising type stem and raising stem. For non-raising stem, the stem rotates and the engaging nut which is fixed to the gate moves linearly in the direction of the gate travel. In the raising stem, the nut engaging with the stem which in turn is connected to the gate is kept in position by sleeve and is rotated through a gear transmission system.
